Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”), a Federal law, generally requires that Renaissance Academy obtain your written consent before disclosing personally identifiable information from your child/ren’s education records. However, Renaissance may disclose Directory Information without your written consent, unless you have advised us otherwise.

The primary purpose of Directory Information is to allow Renaissance Academy to include this type of information in certain school publications. Examples of school publications are a playbill showing the student’s role in a drama production, honor roll or other recognition lists, graduation programs, and sports activity sheets. Directory information could also be disclosed to outside organizations without a parent’s prior written consent, such as to companies that publish yearbooks.

In addition, two other federal laws require the School to provide military recruiters, upon request, with three Directory Information categories – name, address and telephone listing – unless parents have advised the School that they do not want this information disclosed without their prior written consent.

If you do not want Renaissance Academy to disclose Directory Information from your child’s education records without your prior written consent, you must notify the School in writing by September 6. Please send the notification to Mrs. Kristin Mackey in the office.

Renaissance Academy has designated the following information as directory information:

  • Student’s name
  • Participation in officially recognized activities and sports
  • Address
  • Telephone listing
  • Weight and height of a member of any athletic team
  • Electronic mail (e-mail) address
  • Photograph
  • Degrees, honors and awards received
  • Date and place of birth
  • Dates of attendance
  • Grade Level
  • The most recent educational agency or institution attended
