Hello Renaissance community!

I would like to take a moment to introduce myself as your new School Counselor for grades 5 through 8! My name is Mrs. Murtagh (“Mur-tah” or Mrs. M as some students have been calling me). This is my first year working at the Renaissance Academy and I am beyond excited to begin my journey as a School Counselor here at RA!

To provide you with a little information about myself and my professional experience: I graduated from Millersville University in 2009 with a degree in Psychology. I began my career in community mental health counseling, accruing 9 years of valuable experience. In 2016, I interned at a local school district as a School Counselor. This experience truly fostered my passion for the school counseling field and working with students in the local community. In 2017, I graduated from Immaculata University and received my degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a certificate in School Counseling K-12.

Take comfort in knowing that, as your student’s counselor, my primary goal is to ensure your student feeling confident in their ability to access their education and reach their intended future goals. Here is a brief overview of my role at RA:

  • Identifying students’ academic and social/emotional needs
  • Providing necessary interventions to remove barriers to learning and develop skills
  • Direct services include: classroom guidance, groups, individual planning and counseling, crisis response
  • Indirect services include: consultation, collaboration and referrals

Individual and group counseling are available and based on the needs of the student or group of students. These services are meant to be short-term and are focused on helping your student succeed socially and academically. If you have a concern about your child or would like to see them have the support of the counselor and/or their peers in an individual or group setting, please feel free to reach out to me!

Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Social Skills - learning how to communicate more easily with others
  • Families in Change - divorce, separation or other major life changes
  • Anxiety
  • Grief
  • Self-Esteem
  • Meet and Greet with the Counselor and Other New Students
  • Transition to the Upper School

Please reach out to me at any time if you have ANY questions or concerns! I look forward to meeting each student and supporting them in reaching their goals this school year.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Rachel Murtagh
School Counselor, Grades 5-8
