Week in Math:  Topic 10 -  Add within 1,000 using models and strategies

This week:  To end Topic 10 students will use different addition strategies and explain why they work.  Students will also check their work as they solve.  Wednesday we will review for their assessment.  Thursday will be Topic 10 test.  The students shared with the class the parents' reluctance to learn the partial sums algorithm.  Although reluctant themselves, they opened their minds and really gave it their best shot.  They did a super fantastic job.  This skill will come back in third grade:)

    • Tuesday: 10.7 and Topic 10 Review

This Week in ELA:

Story:  The Day the Moon Fell - Myth

Conventions:  Adverbs that tell when and where

Phonics:   Syllable Patterns

Skills:  Plot and theme

Vocabulary:  Multiple Meaning Words

Our Week at a Glance:    Plot and theme will be examined by discussing the beginning, middle, and ending of the story.  Syllables will be another skill we will revisit.  Wednesday we will complete another fresh read.  This will go along with our story.   Although it does not tie into the plot line of our story, it will align with the current skills being taught.  This will be assigned on Wednesday.   I will again send home a hard copy.  Please have your child underline or highlight the answers to the questions within the text of the story.  This is a skill we are doing during our story tests.  This accomplishes 2 things:  It slows them down and it holds them accountable for their answers.

Spelling Words for the next 5-day cycle: downstairs, football, cowboy, houseboat, railroad, rainbow, boyhood, oatmeal, soybean, roadway, outplay, daydream (story and spelling tests:  April, Monday 1:)

  • Monday: Reading Log (read for 20 minutes)  Day 1
  • Tuesday: Reading Log (read for 20 minutes)  Day 2
  • Wednesday:  Fresh Read  Day 3
  • Thursday:  Reading Log (read for 20 minutes)  Day 4
  • Friday: No Homework -  Day

This week in Science:  Chapter 7:  Weather
We ended the week constructing our own weather vane!  This was a lot of fun.  The breeze was blowing just enough for them to use their weather vane.  We will continue on with our unit learning how wind, rain, and temperature is measured.  We will also examine if there are weather patterns both day to day and season to season.  Our Unit 7 assessment will be during the week of April 1.  Finally, Ms. Martinez will also be teaching a lesson to our class.  I am excited!

Homework: Study Guide (TBD)

Science Test Date: Week of April 1
Students are always welcome to bring home their books to help review and prepare for assessments in both Science and Social Studies.

Wednesdays until May - Field Placement - Ms. Martinez
We are lucky enough to have a field placement from Cabrini College.  Ms. Martinez will be in our classroom every Wednesday until May.  She is observing, interacting with our class, and even teaching some lessons!  Next fall, she will be student teaching so we are helping Ms. Martinez prepare for her final chapter in her college career.  Some students have introduced themselves and have welcomed her into our classroom!
