Phoenixville, PA -- On Friday, November 7th, Renaissance Academy students in 5th and 6th grade organized a day honoring one of their classmates, Jared Bender who passed away in October of 2013 after his battle with bone cancer.

The memorial event originated when a group of 6th graders approached Renaissance Counselor, Melissa Laurento indicating that they had been thinking of Jared and wanted to do something in his memory.  After meetings were held in each homebase class, the students came up with the idea to host a 5th and 6th grade football game, as this was one of the things that Jared loved playing at recess.

The day included a lively, two-hand touch football game as well as a dress down day during which students donated $1 to dress in yellow, the official awareness and support ribbon color for Sarcoma bone cancer.  During the game, students proudly held posters they created which displayed all of the great qualities that Jared possessed.  Mohamed Ibraham led the students in a moment of silence before the game and said a few words about Jared’s great character.  “I felt honored to be a part of this special event.  I was truly thinking of my friend, Jared, during this day and I believe all my classmates were too.”

The day raised approximately $440, between the dress down day and the students who paid $2 to play in the football game.  This money will go towards the new playground at the new Renaissance Academy campus which is being dedicated in Jared’s memory.

“I was moved by the compassion of the 5th and 6th grade students in remembering their friend and classmate, Jared.  The football game was a great way to honor his memory,” said Mrs. Laurento.  “He was a special boy who touched so many lives.  His compassion and willingness to help others are qualities that his classmates will never forget.”
