Leadership's Role in Selecting Programs and Planning for Students' Futures.

How does the Leadership at Renaissance select new programs and resources and plan for their student's future?

One of the most positive aspects of working in a Charter School with a fairly small population is the ability to make important curricular decisions without the sometimes onerous oversight of larger organizations. Renaissance's structure includes Curriculum Leaders who are the ‘resident experts’ in their areas of focus. These leaders are provided autonomy to research, explore, and procure the resources they find most suited to the student's needs.

There are multiple factors that come into play when a Curriculum Department brings in new programs. Factors include outdated materials, the need for more hands-on resources, alignment with updated state standards, and teacher or student interest or need. Often, adding a new course will require new materials and resources as well. When determining which programs to consider, the Curriculum Leader will evaluate the program’s alignment with standards, availability of resources for both teachers and students, and overall engagement factor. They will then provide recommendations to the administration and the Curriculum & Achievement Committee of Trustees.

When a new program is introduced, it typically goes through a Pilot Phase. The duration of piloting new programs varies from 3 months to a year, depending on the impact and nature of the program. The Curriculum Leaders at Renaissance report that the school administration is generally open to new ideas and supportive of initiatives that benefit students and teachers. Furthermore, they state that financial support for curriculum needs is strong. All curriculum leaders reported feeling adequately supported financially and having the ability to request and receive necessary resources for student and teacher success.

As with all aspects of managing the many needs of students and staff, there are challenges. Regarding curricular selection and programming, some challenges include delivering the program with fidelity. Due to limited space, teacher availability, and the capacity to offer a wide variety of elective courses due to the school's small size, it is sometimes difficult to ensure all learners have a consistent experience. Leaders indicated that students are generally prepared, but there may be variations depending on individual teacher approaches, foundational skills that may be lacking, and the effects of external factors like COVID-19.

For families considering enrollment at Renaissance, it is a highlight to note factors like the school's ability to provide diverse and inclusive course options and updated and current course materials, make adjustments and updates with agility, and the overall preparedness of students for their post-secondary goals. The focus for students is always on a safe and welcoming learning environment and ensuring their preparation for the future. The staff takes pride in this overarching goal, and its leadership supports the school’s mission philosophically and financially.
